3 Hacks for Surviving Winter
For most of the world, the transition from summer to winter is never easy. You still crave the beautiful warm summer nights. The thought of seeing the temperature below your age is frightening. Love it or loathe it, winter is coming. We want to make your life a wee bit easier with 3 simple tips to help you survive this winter happy and healthy.
- Invest in high quality warm clothes and boots
If you find yourself suffering from frosty fingers and a headache from the electricity bill because you left the heater on all day – isn’t it time to invest in better and warm clothes?
We’re looking essential items like a sturdy coat and well-constructed boots that will last many years seasons to come. It will make all the difference, believe me when you invest in a good quality one.
We’re also a big fan of wearing thermals and no we’re not talking about the lacy granny Bridget Jones one. With technology and style in mind, the designs have evolved. Check out the thin and soft Uniqlo Heattech shirts available for the whole family. They’ll keep you warm (but not too warm) without bulk.
- Get outdoors. Stay active in winter even though it’s tempting to hibernate and watch Netflix
There are many benefits to staying active during winter. And while we know it’s tempting to curl up and hibernate, it’s worthwhile taking the family out and making the most out of the three months.
Staying active in the winter boosts your immunity by keeping the lymphatic system active — as long as you don’t overtrain, which has the opposite effect. Winter fitness also prevents weight gain that can occur from inactivity and drinking, as well as the aches and pains that arise from sitting on your bum all day.
The obvious trick is to find an activity you’ll all enjoy and make it fun. Why not consider planning a trip to hit the slopes or ice skating? Research shows that simply anticipating something you like makes you happier and healthier, so this is a practical way to put that into action. Whatever it is, make an effort to find something (anything!) that you like and then commit to doing it.
And while the kids are asleep, why not have some couple time or even plan a date night? It’s important to make time for yourself and your partner amongst all the chaos of parenting life.
3) We love taking it slow – cook up some warm, comforting recipes
Cooking up a stew is a terrible idea during summer but in winter it’s magical. Bring out the slow cooker and casseroles. Your kitchen will smell amazing and it’s such a bonus when you can have delicious leftovers for lunch the next day.
Slow cooked meals are not only packed full of flavour. There are also some amazing benefits as well:
- You save time – throw all the ingredients in the pot first thing in the morning. Set and forget.
- It’s immune boosting – use high quality stock such as bone broth which is packed full of vitamins and minerals.
- Use spices for better health – Spices not only add flavours to your meal, they come with a range of benefits such as pain management through ginger’s anti-inflammatory properties. See which powerful spices you should be using here.
- You save money – the great thing about slow cooking is that you can save money without sacrificing flavour. For example cheaper cuts of meat such as chuck steak and brisket are better slow cooked.
